Anchusa officinalis
Family: Boraginaceae
Herbaceous perennial. Native to Southern and Eastern Europe.
Very fast growing plant bearing bright neon deep purple scorpioid
inflorescenses, loaded with nectar. A poultice made from the mucilaginous
roots is soothing and healing to wounds or burns. Historically, it
was considered a specific for treating old ulcers and hot, inflamed conditions
such as “Saint Anthony’s Fire.” Cultivation: Easy. As
it is a light-dependent germinator, simply press the seeds into the ground
and keep moist until germination. Space plants 2 feet apart.
Unruly growth to 2 feet tall.
