Family: Apiaceae
Biennial. Native to Eastern North America. This is the
most impressive of all American Angelicas. The giant leaves, purple
stems and enormous white flowering umbels are absolutely regal. The
dried root was used, traditionally, as an aromatic digestive, febrifuge
and anti-inflammatory. Cultivation: Extra care.
Seed must be subjected to a period of moist, cold conditioning before it
will sprout. Does very well if planted outdoors in fall or very early
spring. Seed sown at Horizon Herbs in an outdoor flat on September 1, 1998
began emerging on March 2, 1999, a time period of 182 days. Prefers
moist, calcerous soil. Plant 2 feet apart. Flowers from 6 to
12 feet tall.
