Family: Apiaceae
Biennial. Native to temperate Europe, Siberia and the Himalayan
Mountains. Cultivated worldwide. Medicinal gardens crave the
presence of this, the official species. Bitter aromatic, antimicrobial
and carminative. Flowers yellow-green in the second year to a height of
3 feet. If you order Angelica without specifying which species, this
is the one we will send you. General cultivation: Extra care.
Cold-stored seed. Short-lived seed. Sow in fall or very early
spring. Press light dependent germinators into surface of soil and keep
moist, partially shaded. Direct seed or start in pots or flats and
transplant. Angelica is perfectly cold hardy. Plant prefers
part shade to full sun; rich, moist, poorly drained soil. These biennial
plants usually form a bushy rosette in the first year, followed by a flowering
stalk and early fruiting in the second year, after which the plant dies.
Lack of nutrition, water, or chopping back the flowering stalk will usually
extend life cycle for another year or more. Harvest root
in the fall of the first year, split and dry for use in teas or tinctures.
Harvest seed as it matures for use in tea or tincture.
