Family: Ranunculaceae
Annual. The ethereal, blue and white flowers rest in a
cloud of ferny, green leaf. This seed was originally from East India,
where the seeds are eaten as a condiment, also used for treating indigestion,
appetite loss, water retention and fever. Contains “crystalline nigellone,”
as well as a wide range of amino acids and essential fatty acids.
Large doses not to be used during pregnancy.
Cultivation: Easy. Direct seed in spring, or grow in
pots next to the front door. Sow seed about an inch apart, and do
not thin. Grows to 18 inches tall.
