Herbaceous perennial. Native to the eastern United States hardwood
forest biome. Rapidly disappearing from much of its native habitat.
The tea or tincture of dried root will bring on the menses. Combined
with other female tonics, it serves to prepare the uterus for birth, but
should only be used at the end of the last trimester. Cultivation:
Extra care. Sow this cold-stored seed in potting soil in a shaded
place and keep moist. The seed puts down a root in the first year
and sends up aerial parts the spring of the second year from sowing.
Blue Cohosh likes rich soils, moisture and full shade. We have had excellent
results planting this in a nursery bed in the forest. This seed is
available from August to May only.
