Buckthorn, Common
Rhamnus catharticus
Family: Rhamnaceae
Perennial spiny shrub or small tree. Native to the hedges and fens
of Europe, Asia and North Africa. The black berries, which hang conspicuously,
are used for preparing a purgative and cathartic syrup. This was also an
ingredient in the famous Hoxsey anti-cancer formula (see Red Clover). Cultivation:
Drop seed in boiling-hot water and let stand overnight. Sow in fall
or midwinter, in outdoor flats or nursery bed, for spring germination.
Space 10 feet apart. Full sun or shade.
