Herbaceous perennial. Native to Northern China, Northern Asia
and Europe. Slender, branching stems bear pretty yellow flowers.
The pale-red, bitter root is official to the Chinese Pharmacopoeia, prescribed
as a treatment for menstrual problems and as a febrifuge against malaria
and black-water fever. Cultivation: Extra care. Sow
in early spring. Average germ time 26 days. Thin to 1
foot spacing. Flowers from 1 to 2 feet tall.
