Carob

Ceratonia siliqua

Family:  Caesalpinaceae
Handsome, spreading tree.  Native to the Mediterranean and the Middle East.  If planted outdoors, female trees will eventually yield the sweetly aromatic, honeycombed pods and pulp which provide a rich food for wildlife, domestic animals and aging hippies.  In Israel, the Carob makes a popular remedy for mouth sores and persistent cough. Cultivation:  Extra care.  Be sure to file a hole in the seedcoat before sowing, as otherwise the seed is impermeable to water.  They germinate readily, and may be kept in pots and brought indoors during the winter.    In frost-free zones, Carob grows into a long-lived shade tree..
