Chaparral

Larrea tridentata

Family:  Zygophyllaceae     TOXIC
Perennial bush (so perennial indeed that there is a living plant carbon dated to 13,000 years before the present).   Native to the southwestern United States and Mexico.  The anti-microbial, anti-cancer and free radical scavenging activities of the potent anti-oxidant NDGA and other molecules found in this plant are well known.  Extended internal use, however, may eventually prove toxic to the liver.  Cultivation:   Challenging.  Sow seed in flats in very sandy soil.  Water only once per day.  Expect germination in 3 to 5 weeks.   Plant 4 feet apart.  Grows 3 to 4 feet tall.
