
Salvia hispanica
Family: Lamiaceae
Annual. Native range from southeastern Arizona to South America.
Makes succulent, bright-green, bushy plants up to 4 feet tall. When
seedheads are mature, harvest and dry them, then screen out the copious
seed. The seed makes a stimulating beverage, high in soluble fiber
and oil. Regulates sugar metabolism. Cultivation:
Sow seed in flat in greenhouse. Germ. readily in 4-8 days.
Transplant seedlings out to the garden after the last frost. Direct
seed in very warm climates only. Space plants 1 foot apart.
Grows up to 3 feet tall.
