Datura, Moonflower
Solanaceae
Datura innoxia
Native to tropical America. Purple-stemmed.
The flowers unfold at night, emitting narcotic odors that attract giant
moths. Judged best Datura of the 2001 trials.
TOXIC. Cultivation: Easy: Direct seed
in warm, sunny location or start in greenhouse in flats or pots.
Heat dependent germinator. Likes full sun. Very fast growing.
It is easy to overwater Daturas, which tend to grow better if slightly
water-starved. Given the right conditions, a Datura plant can easily
sprawl 6 feet, so plenty of space should be allowed between plants.
Average germination time 14 days.
