Gourds, Bowl (Canteen gourd, Calabash)
Lagenaria siceraria
Family: Cucurbitaceae
Annual broad-leafed vine. Native to the tropics of Africa, Asia
and the New World. The bowl gourd has been selected to produce fruits
with flattened sides. These were traditionally employed as canteens,
and they can be cut apart to form very functional and natural bowls for
holding dry goods, serving fruit, etc. This cultivar is still under
selection. 80% of the plants will produce flattened fruits, and the
remaining 20% will produce rounded shapes. Cultivation:
Extra care. Gourds can be successfully grown any place where tomatoes will
ripen. From mid-spring to early summer, soak seeds overnight in warm
water, then plant 1 inch deep, with their little “ears” pointing up, in
good, composty soil. Keep warm and moist until germination.
Can be hurried along by starting them indoors in early spring in gallon
pots.
