Belamcanda chinensis
Family: Iridaceae
Perennial. Native to China and Japan. It may be difficult
to convince wandering neighbors that you actually grew this plant from
seed, because they are large Iris which look like they came from the florist’s
(the plants, not the neighbors). Produces masses of exotic orange
flowers, spotted with purple, on loosely branching cymes. Official
to the Chinese Pharmacopeia, the dried root is used in very small doses
to treat upper respiratory problems such as cough, asthma and sore throat.
Cultivation:
Easy and completely rewarding. Sow the shiny, black seeds in
warm soil. Excellent germination will occur within 3 weeks.
The seedlings are charming, miniature Iris. Transplant first into
pots, then to the garden in full sun in a well-drained area. Drought-tolerant.
Plant about 6 inches apart, in patches or multi-rowed borders.
Flowers to 3 feet.
