Lomatium nudicaule
Lomatium nudicaule
Family: Apiaceae
Herbaceous perennial. Native to the American Pacific Northwest.
Otherwise known as Indian Consumption Plant, this plant figures strongly
in mythology and magic of the Native Americans. The seeds were floated
down to the sea as an offering to the salmon, to guide them back to the
spawning pools. Adoption of the use of L. nudicaule seed as
a substitute for L. dissectum root is a positive act of plant conservation.
The seeds can be poulticed, chewed, infused, extracted or added to steam
baths. Cultivation: Sow in the fall or early spring, either
in flats in the greenhouse, or in good, fertile garden soil. Plant
1 foot apart. Grows to 3 feet tall.
