Black Hollyhock Mallow
Alcea rosea
Herbaceous perennial. Native to China. Hollyhocks imbue
the back of the garden, fencerow or roadside bed with country charm, tall
plants with long-lasting, blowsy flowers. This is an extremely handsome
selection, with flowers of midnight purple. General cultivation:
Scarify seed lightly and sow directly in the garden, or in pots or flats
in the spring. Plant prefers full sun to part shade and a rich, moist
soil. Good drainage not necessary. They usually do not flower
until the second year. Plant 1 foot apart. Flowers from 5 to 7 feet
tall.
