Family:  Malvaceae
Herbaceous biennial or perennial.  Native to Europe and Asia.  The leaves and flowers of this herb, steamed or stewed,  are a traditional food of country folk. Cultivation:  Easy.  Sow in spring or summer, in flats or directly in the garden. Transplant to 2 foot spacing.  Prefers moist, rich soil and full sun.  Flowers are a showy purple, with dark veins.  Grows to 3 feet tall.
