Mandragora autumnalis


Family: Solanacea            TOXIC
Perennial.  Native to southeastern Europe and the Mediterranean.  The ancients used Mandrake root to relieve pain and promote sleep, but it was also known to cause strange delirium and madness.  The leaves are harmless and cooling when used as a poultice.  A variety of M. officinalis (which see), with identical medicinal and magical applications, but easier to grow. Cultivation: Seed germinates within three weeks in warm, moist soil.. Plant prefers rich soil and partial shade; regular, light watering. Flowers purple to 12 inches tall, giving way to fruits of yellow and orange.
