Marigold, Mexican

Tagates minuta

Family: Asteraceae
Annual. Native to South America.  Bears tiny tubular flowers on a very tall and fine-leaved plant.  Both aromatic and bitter, the leaf is dried and used as a tea by native people as a digestive aid and antiflatulant.  In the garden, Mexican Marigold attracts many beneficial insects, and is a good companion plant to root crops because its roots repel soil nematodes.  Cultivation:  Grows very well in temperate gardens, but requires 120 days from seed to flower.  Therefore, it should be started early, indoors or in the greenhouse, and transplanted out after frost.  Space plants 2 feet apart.  Flowers yellow to 10 feet.
