Morning Glory, Heavenly Blue

Ipomoea tricolor

Family: Convulvaceae
Annual.  Native to Mexico.  Stunning beauty vining up the trellis on the east side of the house.  A pleasure to gaze upon while you sip your morning tea.  Cultivation:  Easy.  Direct seed in late spring to early summer.  Seedlings do not tolerate frost.  The seeds come up fast and the plants do not always transplant well, so direct-seeding is best.  Choose a place open to the morning sun and shielded from the midday and late-day heat, such as the eastern side of a house.  Trellis below the roof overhang.  Fertilize with a little bone meal and no nitrogen, and prepare yourself for hundreds of “Heavenly Blue” blossoms, mid-summer until frost.
