Motherwort, Chinese (Yi-mu-cao)

Leonurus artemisia

Family: Lamiaceae
Biennial.  Native to Eurasia.  This is one of the several Chinese Leonurus species.  The dried flowering tops and leaf may be tinctured or made into a tea to calm the nerves and promote menstrual flow.  The plant makes delightful, long-lasting, red-purple cut flowers.  The first year rosette is a lush, full bush.  Cultivation:  Easy.  The seed germinates readily, whether sown in the fall  or early spring directly in the garden, or started first in flats and transplanted.  Transplant or thin to 1 foot spacing.  Space plants 1 to 2 feet apart. Flowers in second year to 3 to 4 feet tall
