Emblic Myrobalan (Amla)
Emblic Emblica officinalis syn. Phyllanthus emblica
Family: Euphorbiaceae
Perennial shrub to large tree. Native to tropical Asia and the
mixed hardwood forests of India to 4,500 feet elevation. Many parts of
this tree, including root, bark, flower, fruit and seed are used singly
or in combination (e.g. in the triphala formula) for treating an array
of disorders, including asthma, bronchitis, dysentery, anemia, jaundice,
constipation, gonorrhea and piles. The fruit juice contains
20 times more Vitamin C than orange juice. Cultivation: Easy. Soak
seed overnight. Sow in greenhouse or outdoors in spring or early
summer and keep warm and moist. In tropical areas grow out seedlings in
gallon pots for a year before transplanting. May be grown as a pretty,
richly-leaved exotic indoor or greenhoused plant in temperate climates.
