Zanthoxylum clava-herculis
Family: Rutaceae
Shrub to small tree. Native to the southern U.S., especially
Texas. Both the bark and the seed have long been employed as stimulants
to the circulation, intense sialagogues and as a treatment for rheumatism.
Cultivation: Extra care. Multi-cycle germinator. Scarify.
Sow in the fall, winter or early spring. Expect germination as the
ground warms. Prick seedlings into gallon pots and grow out for a
year before transplanting. Grows to 45 feet.
