Herbaceous perennial.  Native to the central, eastern and southern U.S..  Makes towering, purple spotted stems with umbrella- shaped flowers composed of dense, purple-pink florets.  The root is employed as a urinary tonic.  Cultivation: Easy.   Short-lived seed.  Sow in spring.  Germ. in 8-14 days.  Plant prefers full sun or partial shade, regular garden soil and plenty of water.  Plant 2 feet apart.  Grows up to 9 feet tall.
