Herbaceous perennial.  Native to the wetlands and prairies of the southern U.S..  Multiple globular capitulas on Yucca-like plant.  Decorative dried flower.  The fresh root was pounded and the mash used by the Native Americans as a poultice for snakebite and toothache.   Cultivation:   Easy.  Sow outdoors or in the greenhouse in fall, midwinter or early spring.  Thin or transplant to 2 feet apart.  Likes full sun and moist soil.  Flowers green-white to 4 feet.
