Rehmannia glutinosa
Family: Scrophulariaceae
Tender perennial. Native to Northern China. Rehmannia is a beautiful
genus of plants which has been extensively used and cultivated in China
for over 2000 years. True Rehmannia glutinosa provides a root
which is processed and used as a heart tonic and anti-diabetic medicine
known as Di Huang, still official to the Chinese Pharmacopeia. Because
it contains cardio-active glycosides, the herb
should not be taken concurrently with pharmaceutical heart medications.
Cultivation:
Easy. Press seed firmly into garden bed, flat or pot in the spring.
Keep moist until germination. The plant prefers a light, well-drained
soil and a full sun. Plant 1 foot apart. Flowers to 1 foot,
trumpets colored violet-orange tinged with purple.
