Rehmannia (Chinese Foxglove)...(Sheng di huang)

Rehmannia glutinosa

Family: Scrophulariaceae
Tender perennial. Native to Northern China.  Rehmannia is a beautiful genus of plants which has been extensively used and cultivated in China for over 2000 years.  True Rehmannia glutinosa provides a root which is processed and used as a heart tonic and anti-diabetic medicine known as Di Huang, still official to the Chinese Pharmacopeia.  Because it contains cardio-active glycosides, the herb should not be taken concurrently with pharmaceutical heart medications. Cultivation:  Easy.  Press seed firmly into garden bed, flat or pot in the spring.  Keep moist until germination.  The plant prefers a light, well-drained soil and a full sun.  Plant 1 foot apart.  Flowers to 1 foot, trumpets colored violet-orange tinged with purple.
