Rheum officinale
Family: Polygonaceae
Biennial or herbaceous perennial. The seed for these lovely plants
was originally sourced from France. The epithet “officinale” indicates
a history of medicinal use, but we have not tested the root of these plants
for their laxative effect, and make no guarantees as to their medicinality.
We are impressed by this strain for rapidity of germination, quick growth,
impressive leaf, stalk and root size and the masses of creamy, white flowers
which generally occur early in the second year of growth. Cultivation:
Extra care. Sow seed in rich potting soil in a flat. Germinates in
12 to 18 days. Once they germinate, keep plants moist and partially
shaded. You can grow them out in gallon pots for a year, then transplant
to the garden. They get very large. Plant 2 feet apart and
keep well composted.
