Saffron (bulbs)
Crocus sativus
Perennial bulbous herb. Native to Southern Europe, Asia Minor
and Iran. Blooming in October, the flowers are deep purple, cupping
the long orange-red stigmas which contain the active principle. The
aroma is certainly one of the finest on earth, and a little goes a long
way in flavoring rice. Medicinally, the tea of Saffron is employed
for treating chronic hemorrhage of the uterus. Cultivation:
Plant bulbs in the summer for blossoms in October. Prefers rich, sandy,
well-drained soil, full sun or shade. Plant bulbs (actually they
are corms) 3 inches deep and 6 inches apart.
