Sandalwood, White

Santalum album

Family:  Santalaceae
Evergreen tropical parasitic tree.  Native to E. India and cultivated throughout the tropics for its aromatic wood, which has a bitter and cooling effect.  Rare.  Cultivation: Extra care.  Soak seeds in warm water for 24 hours.  Sow seeds in warm soil, in pots or directly in the garden.  A few months after germination, the plant sends out parasitic roots which feed off closely associated grasses, shrubs and small trees.  Protect from frost.  If kept indoors in a pot, grow grass along with it.
