Family: Lauraceae
Deciduous tree.  Native to the Eastern and Southern U.S..  The spring-harvested root bark of Sassafras is a highly aromatic flavoring agent used widely in the manufacture of true root beer.  This is also a popular folk remedy for "cleansing the blood," and for treating digestive problems, colds, fevers, high blood pressure and rheumatism.  Cultivation: Easy.  Sow in fall.  Grow out in a gallon pot for a year before transplanting.  Tree prefers full sun to partial shade; poor soils or regular garden soil; cold tolerant.  Flowers yellow to 100 feet.
