Perennial shrub.  Native to the eastern U.S..  Elegant white-flowered shrub with unusual bark peeling away in spontaneous quills.  Wood of root is a urinary antiseptic. Cultivation: Extra care.  Light- dependent germinator.  Germ. in 1 to 3 weeks.  Grow in pots for a year before transplanting.  Prefers partial shade and moisture. Excellent for pond edge, waterfalls.   Plant 4 feet apart.  Grows to 6 feet tall.
