Shiso (Zi Su Ye)

Perilla frutescens

Family: Lamiaceae
Annual.  Native to India.  This is a well-beloved Chinese condiment, coloring agent and medicinal herb.  It is extensively cultivated in the Orient.  The pungent and aromatic tea of the dried herb is used for treating fever, headache, nasal congestion and cough.  It has antiseptic properties.  Also helps alleviate seafood poisoning.  The oil of the seeds is edible and resembles Linseed oil.  Cultivation:  Easy.  Direct seed in good soil in midspring.  Germinates in about 11 days and grows rapidly.  Thin plants to 1 foot apart.  Grows to 3 feet tall.
