Shiso, Red Leaf (Zi-su-ye) (Aka-Shiso) (Perilla)

Annual.  Native to India.  The pungent and aromatic tea of the dried herb is used for treating fever, headache, nasal congestion and cough.  It has antiseptic properties.  The herb also helps alleviate seafood poisoning, and is used as a coloring agent in the production of red Ginseng. Cultivation: Easy.  Direct seed in good soil in midspring.  Germ. in about 11 days and grows rapidly.  Plant prefers partial shade to full sun, rich soil and regular watering.  Thin plants to 1 foot apart.  Grows to 3 feet.
