Skullcap, Official

Scutellaria lateriflora

Family: Lamiaceae
Creeping herbaceous perennial.  Skullcap is an indigenous American plant which has come under increasing demand in world markets due to its efficacy as a nervine tonic. One of the problems with growing Skullcap is that of identification, as there are many different species which may or may not have the effects of S. lateriflora.  Rest assured that this is the properly identified “official” species.  The plants bear a characteristically lidded seed capsule.  Cultivation:  Easy.  Direct seed, or start in flats.  Plant prefers fertile soil, partial shade or full sun and plenty of water.   Thin or transplant to 6 inch spacing.  Flowers blue, 2 to 4 feet tall.
