Spilanthes, Brede Mafane

Spilanthes acmella

Family: Asteraceae
Native to the East African coast of the Indian Ocean.  Principal ingredient of the national dish of Madagascar, Le Romazava. Also used by native peoples for treating a host of medical conditions including malaria and thrush. Makes multitudes of bright yellow flowers. For more information, see my publication “Growing Tropical Plants...”  General cultivation: Easy.  Tropical perennial grown as an annual in the temperate north.  Sow in spring in pots in a sunny window, directly in the garden, or in the greenhouse.  Av. germ. time 10 days. Plant prefers plenty of sun, good, rich soil and plenty of water.  Plant 2 feet apart.  Grows 12 inches tall.
