
Stillingia (Queen's Delight)
Stillingia sylvatica
Family: Euphorbiaceae
Native to the Southeastern and Southern U.S. across to Texas.
Rare. Once commonly found in coastal dunes, the pine barrens and
the “sand hill tortoise country” of Georgia, the plant is dwindling rapidly
due to condominium development and the draining of the swamps. The
medicine is in the milky latex of the tuberous root, an ingredient of the
famous Hoxsey anti-cancer compound and as good a lymphatic stimulant and
alterative as may be found anywhere in the botanical kindom. Cultivation:
Extra care. Sow seed in sandy soil in pots in the greenhouse or other
very warm, moist place. Heat dependent germinator. Sporadic
germination over several months. Plant prefers full sun, moist, sandy
soil with good drainage. May not be winter hardy in very cold regions.
Flowers yellow on smooth stems to 3 feet tall.
