Sumach, Smooth

Rhus glabra

Family: Anacardiaceae
Small deciduous tree.  Throughout North America, the several species of Sumac decorate field, roadside and yard with their deep-red, fall colors and erect, cone-like clusters of fruit.  The fruit is covered with a fuzzy layer of malic and ascorbic acid, very high in Vitamin C and quite tasty.  Cultivation: Extra care. Sow seed in fall or early spring.  Grow out in pots for a year before transplanting to the landscape.   Space 6 feet apart.  Grows as tall as 15 feet.
