Turkey Rhubarb

Rheum palmatum syn Rheum rhaponticum

Family: Polygonaceae
Herbaceous perennial.  Native to Mongolia.   There is much confusion and mystery surrounding this plant, which is an aperient (gentle laxative).  In olden times it came only from China and Tibet, generally sold through the great spice bazaars of Turkey (therefore the misnomer Turkey Rhubarb). The plant grows very large, with handsomely palmate leaves.  It is the dried, cured root which porvides the drug. Cultivation: Extra care. Sow seed in rich potting soil in a flat.  Germinates in 12 to 18 days.   Once they germinate, keep plants moist and partially shaded.  You can grow them out in gallon pots for a year, then transplant to the garden.  They get very large.  Plant 2 feet apart and keep well composted.
