Virgin’s Bower

Clematis virginiana

Family:  Ranunculaceae         TOXIC  Not for internal use.
Vining woody perennial.  Native to the central, southern and eastern U.S. and Canada.  The plant grows on trellises, fences or up into trees, and creates its own shade.  The flowers are white and pretty, and the seeds occur in decorative balls composed of long, feathery plumes.  The fresh, summer-harvested leaves are made into a salve for treating scabies and for removing warts. Cultivation:  Extra care.  Light- dependent germinator.  Short-lived seed.  Sow in spring or summer. Grow out for a year before transplanting. Vines to 15 feet.
