Dioscorea batatas
Family: Dioscoraceae
Perennial vine. In the humid evenings and mornings, the leaves
and flowers exude a rich Cinnamon fragrance, stronger even than Ceylon
Cinnamon. Medicinally, the underground and aerial tubers are eaten as a
nutrient tonic. They contain a rich supply of starch,
mucilage, amylase, amino acids (arginine, leucine and tyrosine) and glutamine.
The aerial tubers are delicious baked and the underground tubers are also
delicious, growing much larger. Cultivation: Easy. We
offer aerial tubers for propagation, which in every respect resemble small
potatos. If you plant them, they will grow. Plant in a pot in the
greenhouse or directly in a rich hill in the garden. Full sun, moisture.
Plant 1 foot apart. Trellis.
