Wintergreen (Teaberry)

Gaultheria procumbens

Family: Ericaceae
Native to the Northern U.S. and Canada.  Very abundant in the boundary waters. Glossy-leaved ground cover with waxy, drooping bell flowers giving way to red berries.  The leaves are high in methyl salicylate, used for treating arthritis, headache and colds.  Undiluted essential oil is potentially toxic if taken in its pure form.  Cultivation: Very tiny seed must be sprinkled on surface of soil and pressed in, kept moist until germination.  An acid medium is best.  Plant prefers partial sun and an acid, boggy soil.  Space plants 1 foot apart.  Grows 6 inches tall.
