Jack in the Pulpit

Arisaema triphyllum

Family: Araceae
Woodland herbaceous perennial.  Native to central, eastern and southern United States.  A unique plant, evoking the same magic as a Lily, but far easier to grow.  The plant has a spadix (Jack) enclosed in a delightful spathe (the pulpit).  The fiery hot roots were made into tea as a folk remedy to treat colds.  Cultivation:  Easy.  We offer fresh cold-stored seed, removed from the fruit.  Sow in the greenhouse in a flat.  Seedlings emerge in around 1 month.  This is one of the best examples of a woodland plant seed which will not tolerate dry storage, but acts quite predictably if kept moist, cold-stored and then sowed in a forest-like environment.  Plant seedlings at 6 inch spacing in a woodland situation or in a moist and shady spot in the garden.  Grows only about 12 inches tall.
